UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE BUYING
4 GRADES, EXPLAINED

The shipping container industry uses standardised grading to describe used unit condition. Knowing the difference protects you from overpaying — or buying the wrong unit for your purpose.

Grade Condition Name Best For Technical Standard
IICL-6 Elite Used International Shipping
B2B Leasing fleets
Meets the highest repair standards of the Institute of International Container Lessors. Minimal wear, premium condition. Suitable for major shipping lines.
CW Cargo Worthy
— Standard Global
Overseas Export
Heavy Storage
One-way shipping
Certified for international sea transport. Structurally sound, valid CSC plate, weather-sealed. The standard grade for global cargo movement.
WWT Wind & Watertight
— Economy
Domestic Storage
Site offices
Basic shelters
No holes, no leaks, doors seal tightly, floors intact. May have surface rust, dents or fading paint. Not certified for sea transport.
AS-IS Project Grade Modifications
Workshops
Refurb projects
May have damage. Sold for parts or major refurbishment. The cheapest option — best value if you're going to cut, repaint or modify anyway.
💡 Pro tip: For most B2B buyers in the Baltics and Balkans, CW (Cargo Worthy) offers the best balance of price and quality. WWT is the smart choice if you only need static storage. IICL-6 is worth the premium only if you're operating a leasing fleet.

EX-EUROPEAN HUB SOURCING
QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST

BBS Group sources used containers exclusively from established Western European depots — not from unverified backyard sellers. Our network covers the four largest container hubs in Europe:

  • 🇳🇱 Rotterdam, Netherlands — Europe's largest port, deepest stock pool
  • 🇧🇪 Antwerp, Belgium — strong on reefer and special unit availability
  • 🇩🇪 Hamburg, Germany — strict German inspection standards
  • 🇵🇱 Gdansk, Poland — fastest delivery to Baltics & Eastern Europe

Each unit is visually inspected before purchase, with photo documentation provided. Our depot partners run the same grading process used by Triton, SeaCube, Beacon and other industry leaders — ensuring you get exactly the grade you paid for.

Because we source directly from depots rather than through intermediaries, our prices are typically 10–20% below local Eastern European resellers — without sacrificing on quality or paperwork.

  • ✓ Pre-purchase inspection at depot
  • ✓ Photo documentation included
  • ✓ Valid CSC plate (CW & IICL grades)

USED CONTAINERS — FAQ

What does Cargo Worthy (CW) mean?
Cargo Worthy means the container is structurally sound, has a valid CSC certification plate, is weather-sealed, and is approved for international sea transport. It is the standard grade for export shipping and the most common grade we sell.
What's the difference between IICL and CW?
IICL-6 is the highest used-container grade with the strictest repair standards from the Institute of International Container Lessors — typical for B2B leasing fleets. Cargo Worthy (CW) is one tier below — still seaworthy and CSC certified, but with more cosmetic wear permitted. CW is usually the better value for most buyers.
Are used containers safe for cargo transport?
Yes — IICL and Cargo Worthy grades are certified for international sea transport with valid CSC plates. WWT (Wind and Watertight) grade is suitable for domestic storage but not for ocean shipping. We always confirm grade in writing before sale.
Where do your used containers come from?
Our used stock is sourced primarily from established European depots in Rotterdam (Netherlands), Antwerp (Belgium), Hamburg (Germany), and Gdansk (Poland). All units are inspected before shipping to your destination and come with photo documentation.
How much do used containers cost?
Used 20ft containers start from approximately €1,500 (WWT) to €2,400 (IICL), and 40ft containers from €2,200 (WWT) to €3,800 (IICL), depending on grade, condition, and delivery location. Prices fluctuate with the global container market — request a quote for current rates.
Can I see photos before I buy?
Yes — for any specific unit you're considering, we provide depot photos, the container number, last cargo (if known), and grade certification. For larger orders, we can also arrange a depot inspection.
