Reference
Shipping containers follow internationally recognised ISO standards. Here are the key references:
ISO 1496 defines the structural requirements, dimensions and performance for ISO freight containers. Key parts:
General cargo containers (dry / standard / GP).
Thermal containers (reefer / insulated / refrigerated).
Tank containers for liquids, gases and pressurised dry bulk.
Non-pressurised containers for dry bulk (bulk / hard top).
Platform and platform-based containers (flat rack / platform).
Container coding, identification and marking — assigns the type codes (22G1, 42G1, 45G1, etc.) that appear on every container's CSC plate and door.
Series 1 freight containers — Classification, dimensions and ratings (the master dimensional standard).
International Convention for Safe Containers (1972) — the legal framework for container certification. The CSC plate certifies a container for international use.
