REEFER CONTAINERS
FOR PERISHABLES & PHARMA

Reefer containers (refrigerated containers, refrigerated trailers, RT) are insulated steel containers with built-in cooling units. They maintain set temperatures from −30°C to +30°C, transporting fresh produce, frozen seafood, dairy, meat, pharmaceuticals and any cargo requiring cold chain integrity.

Operating Temperature Range

−30°C +30°C

Standard reefer · Super-freezer variants reach −60°C / −70°C (tuna, deep-frozen pharma, ice cream)

REEFER MACHINERY
WORLD-CLASS BRANDS

All four major cooling unit brands are interchangeable in standard reefer containers. Performance is broadly similar — choice often depends on availability and operator preference.

🥶 Carrier Transicold

PrimeLINE · EliteLINE · NaturaLINE

Industry leader and global default. PrimeLINE for standard freight, EliteLINE for premium fleets, NaturaLINE Ultra Freezer for −60°C operation.

❄️ Thermo King

Magnum · Magnum Plus · Triton

Strong cooling performance. Magnum Plus is widely used by major shipping lines. Excellent for frozen and chilled goods alike.

🧊 Daikin

LXE10E · Ultra-Freezer

Energy-efficient operation, particularly favoured for long-distance routes. Ultra-Freezer variant reaches −70°C for deep-frozen cargo.

⭐ Star Cool

Integrated · Integrated CA

Maersk fleet standard. Integrated CA option includes Controlled Atmosphere — extends shelf life of fresh produce by adjusting O₂/CO₂ levels.

WHAT GETS SHIPPED
IN REEFERS?

🐟 Seafood

Frozen fish, tuna, shrimp, crab. Tuna often requires super-freezer at −60°C.

−18°C to −60°C
🥩 Meat & Poultry

Frozen beef, pork, chicken. Standard frozen settings.

−18°C to −22°C
🥛 Dairy & Cheese

Milk, butter, cheese, yogurt. Chilled, not frozen.

+2°C to +8°C
🍓 Fresh Produce

Berries, citrus, vegetables, exotic fruits. Each commodity has specific optimal temperature.

+2°C to +13°C
🍦 Ice Cream

Requires consistent deep-frozen temperatures throughout the cold chain.

−25°C to −30°C
💊 Pharmaceuticals

Vaccines, biologics, insulin. Strict temperature monitoring required (often with data loggers).

+2°C to +8°C (or −20°C)
🌷 Flowers & Plants

Cut flowers, plants, bulbs. Chilled to extend vase life — typical cargo from Africa/South America to EU.

+1°C to +4°C
🍷 Wine & Beer

Premium wines transported chilled to preserve flavour during long ocean voyages.

REEFER CONTAINERS — FAQ

What temperature range can a reefer container maintain?
A standard reefer container can maintain temperatures from −30°C to +30°C, with precision of ±0.25°C in modern units. Super-freezer (deep frozen) variants reach −60°C to −70°C — typically used for tuna, ice cream and pharmaceuticals.
Why is reefer interior smaller than dry container?
Reefer containers have insulation walls (typically 75 mm of PU foam) and a cooling unit that takes up roughly 0.5 m of length at one end. This reduces internal volume by about 12-20% compared to dry containers of the same external size — but provides full temperature control. A 40ft HC reefer offers 67 m³ vs 76.4 m³ for the dry equivalent.
What power does a reefer container need?
Reefer containers require 380-460V 3-phase electrical power at 50 or 60 Hz. Each unit draws between 3-15 kW depending on cooling load (frozen runs higher than chilled). They can run from ship power, port grid, on-truck gensets, or portable diesel gensets when stationary.
What brands of reefer cooling units are available?
The four major reefer machinery brands are Carrier Transicold, Thermo King (Magnum, Triton), Daikin, and Star Cool (Maersk fleet standard). All are interchangeable in standard reefer containers and offer similar performance. Service availability and parts may favour different brands in different regions.
Can a reefer container be used for storage when not running?
Yes — a reefer with the cooling unit off (NOR — Non-Operating Reefer) makes excellent insulated storage. NOR units cost 30-40% less than working reefers and still provide thermal stability, sound insulation, and watertight integrity. Common uses: archive storage, sensitive electronics storage, food-grade dry warehousing.
What is Controlled Atmosphere (CA)?
Controlled Atmosphere is an option on advanced reefer units that adjusts the internal O₂ and CO₂ levels (typically reducing O₂ to ~3-5%, raising CO₂ to ~5-15%). This slows the ripening of fresh produce, extending shelf life by weeks. Common for bananas, avocados, blueberries, asparagus.
How long can a reefer hold temperature without power?
A well-insulated reefer can maintain frozen temperatures for 12-24 hours after disconnection (depending on ambient temperature, cargo mass, and starting set point). Chilled cargo loses temperature integrity faster — usually 6-12 hours. For cold chain integrity, continuous power is required.
