20FT CONTAINER
DIMENSIONS & SPECIFICATIONS

Complete technical specifications for the 20ft standard ISO shipping container — the original TEU. External and internal dimensions, weight, capacity, and door opening. Metric (mm/kg) and imperial (ft/lb) side by side. ISO 1496-1 certified.

20FT STANDARD
THE ORIGINAL TEU

The 20ft standard dry container (also known as 20' DC, 20' GP, or 2200) is the global shipping unit of measure — the original TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit). All container ship capacities, port throughputs, and freight rates are quoted in TEU. Best suited for dense, heavy cargo where weight — not volume — is the limiting factor.

COMMON 20FT USE CASES

The 20ft is preferred when cargo is dense or heavy rather than bulky. Common loadings:

⛏️ Minerals & Metals

Iron ore concentrates, scrap metal, copper, lead. Heavy density means 20ft hits payload limit before volume.

📦 Beverages & Liquids

Bottled drinks, canned goods, drums of chemicals, oils. Weight-limited cargo.

📃 Paper & Pulp

Reels of paper, cardboard, pulp bales. Dense and heavy — 20ft handles 28+ tonnes payload.

⚙️ Machinery & Engines

Industrial equipment, motors, pumps, generators. Heavy and compact — fits 20ft perfectly.

🧱 Building Materials

Tiles, ceramics, sanitaryware, marble slabs. Heavy materials better suited to 20ft.

🏗️ Site Storage

Construction site offices, secure tool storage. Easy to handle on smaller sites than 40ft.

20FT CONTAINER — FAQ

What are the dimensions of a 20ft shipping container?
A 20ft standard shipping container has external dimensions of 6.058 m (20 ft) length × 2.438 m (8 ft) width × 2.591 m (8 ft 6 in) height. Internal usable space is 5.898 m × 2.352 m × 2.393 m, with a total volume of 33.2 m³ (1,172 ft³).
How much does a 20ft container weigh?
A 20ft standard container has a tare (empty) weight of approximately 2,200 kg (4,850 lb). The maximum gross weight is 30,480 kg (67,200 lb), giving a maximum payload of 28,280 kg (62,350 lb).
How many pallets fit in a 20ft container?
A 20ft standard container fits 11 Euro pallets (1200 × 800 mm) or 9–10 standard/US pallets (1200 × 1000 mm) on the floor. Stacking can increase capacity if cargo allows.
What is a TEU?
TEU stands for Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. It is the standard measurement used by container shipping lines and ports to describe capacity. One 20ft container = 1 TEU. One 40ft container = 2 TEU. A typical container ship may carry 10,000 to 24,000 TEU.
Why does a 20ft container carry more weight than a 40ft?
Both 20ft and 40ft containers share the same maximum gross weight of 30,480 kg. Because the 20ft is lighter (2,200 kg vs 3,750 kg tare), it has higher net payload — making it the preferred choice for dense, heavy cargo like minerals, machinery, paper, or beverages.
When should I use a 20ft instead of a 40ft?
Use 20ft for: heavy cargo (minerals, beverages, paper), small site access (driveways, narrow yards), or smaller volumes. Use 40ft for: bulky cargo (furniture, textiles, retail goods), economies of scale (lower cost per cubic metre).
